Susanne has extensive experience in administrative law, federal civil law enforcement, health law, and civil rights. She is passionate about advocacy, equity, human rights, and justice, and is committed to promoting Tribal self-determination, equality, property rights, culture, religion, health, and economic well-being.
Prior to joining Patterson Real Bird & Rasmussen LLP, Susanne served as an Investigator/Equal Opportunity Specialist with the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, Office for Civil Rights. In that role, she ensured compliance with federal nondiscrimination and health information privacy laws by conducting investigations involving complex civil rights and healthcare complaints. Her experience also includes civil litigation, international law, and Indigenous Peoples’ rights. Before her legal career, Susanne worked in a variety of roles with nonprofit organizations in Australia, Colorado, and Massachusetts, where she developed a lifelong commitment to public service and advocacy.
Susanne earned her Juris Doctor, along with an American Indian Law Certificate, from the University of Colorado Law School. She also holds a Master of Arts in Public Theology from United Theological College and a Master of International Studies from the University of Sydney, both completed while living and working in Australia. She received her Bachelor of Arts in History from Graceland University in Lamoni, Iowa.
Originally from Broomfield, Colorado, Susanne now lives in Boulder with her husband, Burl, and two children.
