The U.S. House of Representatives Committee on Appropriations, Subcommittee on Interior, Environment and Related Agencies announced it will take in-person testimony from Indian tribes and Alaska Natives on March 8 and 9, 2023. This is the first time since the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic that the Subcommittee will hear directly from tribes about funding needs for federal programs supporting Indian tribes.
The hearings bring together Indian tribes and Alaska Natives from across the country to provide testimony and specific information that will help the Interior Subcommittee understand the needs of Indian tribes and help to ensure funding for tribal programs. Tribes are expected to provide testimony on funding needs for law enforcement, roads, water infrastructure, energy development, health care, education, and more. The White House is expected to release its Fiscal Year 2024 budget on March 9, 2023.
The Subcommittee took requests to testify over the past couple weeks. Tribes not able to testify in-person can still submit written testimony by March 17, 2023. Instructions for providing written testimony guidelines can be found here.
